Ozone Can Help Reduce Pathogens on Hatchery Eggs

Hatcheries experience a wide variety of pathogenic contamination during their entire cycle, from farm to incubator to hatching (the hatching stage having the highest amount of contamination) which must be constantly monitored. In addition to flawless housekeeping, there must also be a good regime of sanitation and disinfection.

In the ongoing effort to reduce post-hatching lethality in hatcheries, ozone can be a great benefit in both its gaseous and aqueous forms. Ozone provides fast and efficacious broad spectrum antimicrobial kill including E. coli, Listeria, Salmonella, Staphylococcus, Campylobacter, Pseudomonas, Aspergillus, and Bacillus.

A DEL Ozone system is an excellent addition to standard protocol, and in some cases it can replace traditional chemical processes. It can be utilized as a fogger in the incubators, as well as used in its aqueous form as a disinfectant spray on any wettable surface. Aqueous ozone can be sprayed on walls, floors and equipment, including incubator trays, hatcher trays and chicken boxes. Disinfecting with ozone can be performed manually, or through automatic tray washing systems.

KEY POINTS

  • Ozone kills all known human,
    animal and food pathogens
  • Reduces sanitation time
  • Aqueous or gaseous application
  • Gentle and safe for workers
  • FDA and USDA approved

In addition to hatchery eggs, ozone can be utilized in commercial egg processing. Ozone can be adapted to any existing aqueous or gaseous configuration with minimal retrofit of water and power. Aqueous ozone can be utilized through sprayers and gaseous ozone can be applied into any confined location.

Ozone can be sprayed as a disinfectant directly on the eggs, while sanitizing and disinfecting the conveyor system in process. Ozone is an approved food additive, so it can be applied at any time during processing, on the product and equipment simultaneously. When sprayed on conveyors and automated equipment during processing, ozone can eliminate biofilm and significantly reduce organic and inorganic debris on all surfaces. This can reduce downtime for cleaning as well as provide further protection from cross-contamination in the processing line.
